Black chalk, 200 x 308 mm. Ruled framing lines in black chalk, with superimposed lines in brown ink. A couple of faint brown spots in the sky. Watermark: Fleur-de-lis (close to Heawood 1762). Signed and dated at the bottom, in the drawing, in black chalk, E. V. VELDE 1624. Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). Reportedly numbered on the mount, in pen and brown ink, 1963 (Sparre).
A good example of the artist’s chalk technique, broader lines in the foreground gradually becoming finer and shorter in the background. The craggy outcrop on the left, resembling the rocks of Roelandt Savery, is reinforced with darker lines. Davies believes that scenes like this influenced the way Everdingen rendered rocky landscapes on his Scandinavian tour. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 427]
