This painting of Turck, one of Karl XI’s dogs, dates from 1686, the year after the king had received a polar bear as a gift from the Russian tsar. Turck was to be a return gift from Karl XI but, before the dog was sent to Moscow, the king wanted Ehrenstrahl to immortalise him. This was the result.
