Older men – philosophers, prophets and apostles – deep in thought, is a recurring motif in Rembrandt’s work around 1630. They were drawn after live models, sometimes using the same person. By depicting the lonely thinker close-up, Rembrandt focuses our attention on the visible traces of contemplation or divine inspiration in the model’s face.
