Elisabeth Jennings was the daughter of the immensely rich ironmaster Frans Jennings from Belfast. Her father’s wealth paved the way for two marriages to members of the Swedish aristocracy. Johan Henric Scheffel’s portrait depicts her in the French Rococo fashion. It is a direct paraphrase of Jean-Marc Nattier’s painting of Ulla Sparre (now in the Louvre), set in an illusionistically painted oval picture frame and showing the sitter in a red, fur-trimmed outfit with a muff.
