Jacob Scott was one of many Scottish officers who moved to Sweden in the early 17th century. He rose to the rank of colonel and fought alongside Gustav II Adolf at the Battle of Dirschau in 1629. Three years later he was among the officers awarded a memorial badge of the dead king, hanging from a gold chain draped in mourn- ing crape. This portrait was painted the same year as Scott became governor of Narva.
