Abraham Grill, like several members of his Swedish-Dutch family, was a prominent figure in ironmaking and commerce. This portrait is done in wax, with clothes of velvet. Wax being a sensitive material, the relief was mounted in a deep glazed frame. It is signed “Jean Kolm fecit”. The artist, Johann Wilhelm Kolm, had been waxrelief maker to the court in Berlin, but had later moved to Amster- dam, one of the cities where the Grill trading house operated.
