Charles (the future Charles XV) was the first member of the Bernadotte dynasty to be born in Sweden. Westin’s painting is a dynastic manifestation of the new royal house. The prince sits on his mother Josefina’s lap. On the wall hangs a portrait of his father, Oscar (I). In his hand, Charles holds a miniature of his grandfather, Charles XIV John, and on Josefina’s bracelet we see his grandmother, Desideria. The portrait collection also includes an oil sketch by Westin of the head of Josefina (NMGrh 4179).
