Gauguin spent two periods living in Tahiti in French Polynesia. In wood carvings from the time he spent there the artist mixes impressions from Oceanian culture with elements from Asian art and other sources. In his paintings and sculptures Gauguin wanted to convey a spirit of original, primitive religion and considered that this required a relatively crude technique. This relief was in Gauguin’s own home and originally it was painted.
