Another enamel exhibited by Hall at the Salon in 1777 was a small portrait of a young woman “d’après nature”, which means painted from a live model. She is depicted in an historic costume, intended to be reminiscent of van Dyck’s portraits. Could this be the picture of the 20-year-old artist Mme Vigée-Lebrun that was exhibited at the time, according to draftsman Gabriel de Saint-Aubin. If so, it would explain the picturesque van Dyck costume, which the contemporaneous English artist Joshua Reynolds said was mainly needed for artistic reasons and was therefore suitable for a portrait of an artist.
