The inside gold mount of the miniature in this locket is the original. The outside is covered with shagreen, an exclusive kind of roughened leather. On the back is a mirrored monogram in gold embossing: GA under a royal crown. The looking glass inside the locket is unusual, but it could have been a way for the owner to see their face next to that of the giver, or simply, and more prosaically, a make-up mirror.
