Three portraits by two different artists have here been mounted in a novel way, for the collector Horace Walpole. On the left is Arabella Stuart, a relative of Queen Maria Stuart [NMB 970]. The portrait was painted by the French-born Isaac Oliver and shows the artist’s vibrant realism. His son Peter’s group portrait of the Digby family was modelled on a painting by van Dyck [NMB 969]. Sir Kenelm Digby (1603–1665) was a prominent diplomat and scientist whose wife Venetia was considered one of the era’s great beauties [NMB 971].
