Although works by miniaturist Marie-Anne Gérard were frequently found in exhibitions and auctions during her lifetime, until the modern day they went under the name of her husband, Jean-Honoré Fragonard. Marie-Anne Gérard’s specialism was children’s portraiture, often genre portraits in historic costume. It is apparent that she acquired a share of the market not only through her niched subject, but also through the character of her painting. Marie-Anne Gérard worked using a personal style, with flowing watercolours, even if it was closely related to her husband’s way of painting.
