Hans Fredrik Gude travelled to Düsseldorf to study at the young age of 16, in 1841. There, landscape painting was developing towards realism, which influenced Gude. The artist avoided the idealisation employed by many others in the mid-19th century. His landscapes are often objectively depicted with no romantic haze, instead they are sparing in their use of colour and light. This study is a good example.
