Wilhelm von Gegerfelt was one of the Nordic artists who spent long periods in France at the end of the 1870s and during the 1880s. These artists were inspired by modern French art, and particularly by realism and naturalism. The aim was to show reality without beautifying the subject. Simple everyday scenes and landscapes were popular. When the artists returned to their homelands, they often depicted similar subjects.
