Bennett belonged to an older generation than the artists who portrayed Swedish winter scenes in the national romantic style in the late 1800s. And yet, his paintings reveal a similar ambition to capture the characteristically Nordic mood created by the snowy, dark winters. In this view of the royal palace the moonlight gives a dreamlike feel to the scene. Dark figures move silently across the soft blanket of snow and the enchanting light reveals sleigh tracks and casts moon shadows.
