Emma Löwstädt-Chadwick was one of the most sensitive landscape painters of her day. In studies like this she rendered the light and moist, misty mood of a beach at low tide with a few assured brushstrokes. Although her husband was wealthy, she did not abandon her artistic career, as many other women artists were forced to. She remained in France for the rest of her life and exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon.
