Among Per Krafft the Elder’s teachers was Alexander Roslin, in Paris. Krafft left Paris for Bayreuth in 1762, taking up a professorship at the art academy. Krafft’s child portraits are discerning, with an unusual feel for children’s characteristics. We see children’s curiosity, hopes and optimism, but also their thoughtfulness and resignation in the face of the expectations and demands of adulthood.
