In a letter to Rosalie de Laborde in spring 1790, Hubert Robert wrote that he had received many visitors in his studio, who had come to admire his paintings from Méréville. He proudly states that several of them were Englishmen, who said that they had not seen anything more magnificent and picturesque than this park. The views probably included this painting of the grotto, which was one of Robert’s creations.
