Osslund devoted almost the whole of his artistic career to painting landscapes from northern Sweden. He had come into contact with Paul Gauguin’s paintings in France and they were to set their stamp on his creativity throughout his life. Osslund usually painted landscapes but sometimes people as well, like this farmer from Nordingrå. Like his landscapes, his portraits became images of a Sweden that had not yet been exploited by industrialism or tourism and were painted in a “primitive” manner that enhanced the sense of originality.
