The mood is morose. I In the background we can just about make out the clerk in the dusky lighting. Around the mid-19th century, art collectors were insatiable when it came to sentimental scenes of poverty. One of the artists who painted such motifs, Carl d’Unker, was unusual, however, since his pictures such as this one or scenes from railway station waiting rooms, revealed the darker sides of class society.
