Here Werenskiold shows the start of the dramatic events that were to take place in the ancient royal seat of Avaldsnes and that led to a feud between Olav the Holy and Erling Skjalgsson’s families. Erling was the uncle of Asbjörn who had cold-bloodedly killed Olav’s governor Tore Sel. Olav condemned Asbjörn to death but was obliged to pardon him after Erling had laid siege to Avaldsnes. Olav was killed by Tore Hund who was also an uncle of Asbjörn, at the Battle of Stiklestad.
