During the second half of the 19th century it had become possible to establish more correct information about the customs of Scandinavia’s past. Various finds had shown what the items that were in use actually looked like. In Werenskiold’s illustrations to Snorre’s sagas there are no longer, for example, romantic images of horns or winged Viking helmets, but more historically correct, simpler and more practical helmets.
