Jacques-Antoine-Marie Lemoine was also a pastellist and graphic artist, which surely influenced his work as a miniaturist, following Hall. This can be seen in his self-portrait and his depiction of his wife. They were produced 1793–95, with the picture of his wife being especially influenced by the fashions of the revolutionary age. In his self-portrait, Lemoine clearly shows his unusually free use of watercolours, with flowing brushstrokes and highlights in white that produced vibrant accents, as in pastel paintings. The artist’s body of work, which is of consistently high quality, was probably relatively small.
