Today Fearnley is best known for his oil studies. They were acclaimed after his death when artist Johan Christian Dahl recommended the Norwegian state to buy them. Fearnley often chose fleeting motifs giving him technical challenges. In the scene from Capri, the purpose seems to have been capturing the distinctive evening light. The couple with the guide in the foreground is probably a later addition to make the painting more commercially viable.
