Late Renaissance portraits are mostly depictions of power and social status. A modern-day viewer may find the unknown artist’s focus on details of the costumes and the contrast with the princely couple’s completely neutral faces superficial and perhaps naive, but this was the ideal in northern Europe in the late 16th century. The distance is deliberate, intended to inspire our reverence for the God-given world order.
