This portrait of six nieces and nephews of Hedvig Eleonora was painted the year their mother died. Shortly after, the eldest daughter, Magdalena Sibylla, was sent to Stockholm to be brought up there by her aunt. The children are shown in a landscape. The boys’ costumes and the staff of the youngest girl hint at courtly ideals drawn from antiquity and contemporary pastoral poetry. The artist, Salomon Duarte, was court painter to the children’s father.
