John Linnell is famous mainly for his landscapes, but he also painted miniatures early in his artist career. Thus, his miniatures are relatively rare and often have the apperarance of unfinished works, partly due to the sketchy style he favoured. On the whole, however, Linnell seems not to have been satisfied with the result, nor were his clients overly impressed.
