This portrait was painted the year the young count palatine Charles Gustav, a cousin of Queen Christina, was appointed commander-in-chief of the Swedish forces in Germany in the closing phase of the Thirty Years War. At the Diet the following year, he was elected heir to the Swedish throne. This portrait can be dated to 1648, as it emphasises the count’s military position. In addition, a debt to Beck appears in Charles Gustav’s accounts for that year.
