Traditionally attributed to Correggio. Attributed by Sirén to the young Annibale. A red chalk study of the same model seated on a crate with his arms outstretched, possibly made on the same occassion, is in the British Museum. The anatomical inconsistancies of the figure - for example the big legs and small arms - as well as the accentuation of the contours are, however, more characteristic of Faccini's style and compare well with other drawings by him, eg. a study of a reclining male nude in the Ashmolean. Catherine Loisel prefers an attribution to Annibale Carracci of both these drawings and suggests a data about 1583-88, from the same period as the British Museum drawing for the Baptism of Christ.
