This painting dates from the year the queen passed away. Apart from her swollen hands, however, the idealised portrait gives no indication that she was suffering from poor health. The hilly landscape is characteristic of Baden, where Fredrika Dorotea Vilhelmina was born and spent most of her years in exile following her expulsion from Sweden in 1809, but may also represent Switzerland, where she died. The artist, Stieler, was court painter in Bavaria.
