Rudbeck has been called a universal genius on account of his unique breadth of knowledge, ranging from medicine and botany to mechanics. Early in his career he discovered the lymphatic vessels and was made professor of anatomy at Uppsala University, indicated by the botanical plate and the human skeleton he is pointing to. However, there is no reference here to Rudbeck’s theories about Sweden being the sunken island of Atlantis, published ten years before Kenckel painted his portrait.
