Zorn painted this watercolour on Dalarö in 1885. It shows Emma beneath a Japanese parasol, reflecting the artist’s interest in Japan’s visual culture which was substantial at the time. In the same year the painting was also shown at the “Opponent’s” exhibition in Stockholm. This was the first substantial manifestation of opposition to the Academy of Fine Arts which the younger artists regarded as too old-fashioned.
