Zorn seldom worked in pastels and, according to the note on the back of the painting, this portrait of Emma was his first attempt at the genre. The setting is the Zorn apartment in Paris and, as on several past occasions, the painter has immortalized his wife in a domestic situation, peering short-sightedly at a book. In the background there are Japanese screens which were highly fashionable at the time.
