A woman reads to another woman on the rocks at Kvarnholmen, on the approach to Stockholm. The city behind them is bathed in a warm evening light. Perhaps they are reading something by Goethe, Rousseau, or another author who depicted nature and linked elements of the landscape to human emotions. Bennet’s painting depicts contemporary life in about 1860, but its tangible atmosphere is also a fine illustration of these links.
