Cleobis and Biton pulled their mother in a chariot all the way to Hera’s temple where she was a priestess, as there were no oxen. She asked the goddess to honour the sons with the greatest gift the gods could give. Thus, Hera let them die in their sleep. The story gave the artist a pretext to paint a vast landscape with ruins of ancient architecture. Such landscapes were often a background for scenes with philosophical or religious content.
