Internationally, Pehr Hilleström’s paintings from the Falun copper mine have few equivalents. Their dramatic contrasts between dark and light allow us a sense of the dangerous work performed below ground. The miners either descended on ladders or were winched down in barrels on the ends of ropes. The environment was anything but healthy, filled with damp, soot and smoke.
