The landscape painter Just Jerndorff is one of the lesser-known artists of Denmark’s Golden Age. Like Købke, he received his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He became a closer friend of Købke’s on a study tour of Switzerland and Italy in 1834–40, during which this small, sketch-like portrait was painted.
