Prior to the launch of the film A Woman of Affairs (1928), Greta Garbo was photographed by Edward Stei- chen for Vanity Fair. His portraits include close-ups in which Garbo pulls her hair back, focusing attention on her face. Steichen’s photographs were in line with the image the film company MGM had created for the actress in her roles as a tragic femme fatale. The por- traits, in turn, helped to fuel the myth of the mysterious film star.
