Prince Eugen is known mainly for his magnificent, symbolic landscapes from the 1890s. Alongside these, he also produced paintings in the outdoor realist style he learned in France in the 1880s. Several of his Stockholm paintings belong to this category – such as this winter scene from Beckholmen, where the snowy view is rendered in an impressionist atmospheric style. Like Emma Toll, whose work is also featured here, he applied the approach he learned in France to capture a typically Nordic subject.
