Bache’s painting shares many features with Eckersberg’s motifs from the harbour, but the perspective is different. The work has been interpreted symbolically as an image of the old being replaced by the new. The superannuated vessel is lying in dock to be converted for steam power. Not an effective solution but a measure to modernise the fleet. This Golden Age vessel took part in the unsuccessful war of 1864, after which it was viewed as obsolete.
