Stockholm in the winter is a recurring theme in Alfred Bergström’s oeuvre. He was especially fascinated by the light effects caused by snow. The violet shadows in the foreground contrast against the sunlit building and the dazzlingly white snow drifts in the middle ground. Every nuance in the scene is meticulously depicted – the tracks in the snow, the trodden paths and the varied shrubs. One of the figures has halted – with his hands in his pockets he turns towards us and seems to meet our gaze.
