Bennett belonged to a circle of military men who promoted themselves as artists in the early 1800s. He has portrayed Stockholm in winter in several paintings. The matter-of-fact realism typical of his work is prominent in this painting of the snow-covered courtyard of the palace on Gustav Adolfs torg that now houses the Foreign Ministry. This scene was very familiar to the artist – he lived in a flat in the palace for several years.
