Frans Heiss was one of a number of brewers who helped to support Zorn financially while he was studying. The portrait of Heiss and his wife was painted more than a decade later when Zorn had become an established artist. The portrait is a fine, early example of how Zorn, in paintings of men from about 1890 onwards, chose to reduce his palette in order to let the subject appear merely through its presence.
