Richard Bergh has painted his friend and colleague, landscape painter Julia Beck, as an elegant Parisian and intellectual woman. According to the artist himself, the painting conveys the sitter’s personality through her everyday surroundings: “She loves flowers, Chinese fans, books, mirrors, all sorts of small items and, without these, I do not believe one can obtain the ‘Julia Beck’ who I have come to know and want to depict”.
