Marcus Larson painted Waterfall in Småland during his stay in Paris, after completing his artistic training in Düsseldorf. It was based as much on the contemporary Romantic taste for wild, “untouched” countryside as on studies of nature in his native Sweden. Larson’s landscape caused a sensation, but a motion to the Swedish Parliament calling for it to be acquired by the state was rejected.
