Hilleström’s paintings often focus on the work of servants in their everyday surroundings. These works are early documentation of interiors and of the social hierarchy. Here, Hilleström shows a young woman, a maid – judging by her clothes – who has taken a short break from her never-ending work. She has put down a large copper pot to buy a broadside ballad, a love poem, which was popular entertainment at the time.
