According to Zorn himself, he was inspired by the subject on the morning after a festive evening in Madrid to which he had travelled from London via Portugal. His model was the Swedish consul in Valencia, Harald Johan Dahlander. But rather than being a portrait of the consul, the watercolour is a sort of role portrait in which Zorn has seized the consul’s appearance to create a purely demonic expression.
