    This portrait of the 6-year-old Duke Charles Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp, holding a baton of command, was commissioned by his great-grandmother, Hedvig Eleonora. She appears to have had quite a soft spot for her great-grandson. Charles Frederick, who was born in Stockholm, was brought up here by his mother, Charles XII’s sister Hedvig Sofia. Under the Act of Succession then in force, he was also a Swedish prince and hence a potential successor to the throne.
