Following lengthy studies, Bengt Oxenstierna travelled widely in the 1610s, visiting Jerusalem, Tunis and Algiers, Aleppo and Baghdad, Egypt and Persia. On his return to Sweden he was entrusted with diplomatic missions, and from 1634 he was gover- nor general of Livonia. As stated below the suggestive view of an avenue, he is chiefly remembered for having “roamed almost the whole world”. Since the 18th century, he has often been referred to as “Traveller Bengt”.
