Before Gustav III’s visit to France in 1784, an apartment was hastily organised for him in Versailles, but he rejected it. Despite Gustav travelling privately, the character of his visit was more that of a state visit. This was particularly true of the many gifts handed over by the French royal couple, which included the Micaud and two other painted porcelain pieces. They were requisitioned from commissioned stock at the Sèvres manufactory.
